The Living Embodiment of Early Modern and Romantic Verse

I immersed myself so much into these 2 eras for 5 or so years, from the late 80s to the mid 90s, that they changed my way of thinking, reordered my mind, changed who I am, made me more the the subject of a ballad, or a verse romance than a student of these forms. Memorized thousands of lines of Keats, Eliot, Yeats, Shelley, Wordsworth, cummings, Pound, Stevens, Frost, and Dickinson and others, and then some. They changed the way I speak, the way I breathe, the way I think, the way I write and read. I hardly read anymore, but am a fearsome reader. I live the verse. I am the verse. I am a beast, a primitive, with the deepest profundity of the great odes instilled into his scaffolding, his unconscious. Do I boast? Yes, so what.

The dark and forbidding land of Kulg emitted the warmth and spice of amber along with an earthy richness for a sultry scent, while further still, at a hilltop height, emerald redundant forests clattered and clashed, rattled and splashed, like mad rhymes. Easy to tell the land was no joke, when the fragrance bent patchouly then blended floral, when the swords clattered and magic missiles flung far, when the mob went mad and committed foul crimes, when to be alive was no jive, when droop-headed flowers convulsed upward to the pagan sunrise, and the quivering sky wheel spun, and Brothdong galloped away, debris about, then gone, magic, then none. Are you kidding? Where would this wild assumption come from? Oxford University has even published studies on the afflictions that ARE correlated with genius: schizophrenia,…

Wow, this guy has no idea what he’s talking about, in addition to being hostile and rude.

1. There are at least as many studies disproving a link between schizophrenia or bipolar and creativity as demonstrating one.

2. Being “wired to see the world differently” is true for autism as well as schizophrenia, just in a different way. If “seeing things differently” makes someone creative automatically (which it likely doesn’t, because creativity also involves inventing something novel and useful to society), then it applies to autism too.

3. He’s obsessed with the myth of the romantic genius, which is cute, but he should read Peter Kramer’s “Against Depression” and think things through a little more deeply. While artists may often be mentally ill, they may well create *in spite of* and during periods of respite from their mental illness rather than because of it.

4. Also, all his examples of creativity are from the arts. I really hope he’s not saying that creating new technological inventions or scientific discoveries isn’t creative. I suppose it’s possible that creativity in the arts could look more like schizophrenia than autism, but that doesn’t mean all creativity works the same way.

5. To label an entire group of people incapable of being creative because they don’t look like famous artists is not only offensive but stupid.

Very true! I think I just wanna replace one stereotype of genius with another, one that I like better. I am a gay male and am not attracted at all to these new media depictions of genius. They do nothing for me, and are frustrating, repetitive and boring. But, Van Gogh? Keats? Picasso? Idealized depictions of similar brilliance in literature and on film? I would stem cell grow a womb to have their children. And the afflictions loosely related to the two depictions, and similar ones, are the intellectual casualties of this inner war in my demented mind! Never ill will. Never offense taken. Just raw unfiltered typing. Peace.

You’re right, Van Gogh, Keats, and Picasso were amazing. I’d love to know people like that today (though might not want to live with them). There’s a lot to celebrate—but no need to tear other kinds of minds down to do it. Make sense?

From what I’ve seen, folks with mental health problems and those with autism spectrum disorder get some similar crap from people. So why not help each other out rather than tear each other down?

But, I completely forgot about Craig Nicholls of The Vines! He is a beautiful man with Aspergers Syndrome. Sadly, apparently he has ‘deteriorated’ (so the article puts it) in recent years and The Vines are pretty much dead. But I was a huge fan and know every song on each of their first 2 albums. Nicholls was the creative force of the band. Completely slipped my mind while I was rampaging on current media depictions, since I was a fan more in the early 2000s than as of late. Of course, The Vines are not a ‘depiction’, but are a real world band, but they are in some ways a product of the image making and celebrity industries. Check out the video to Winning Days. It is so awesome.; And, check out Craig Nicholl’s beautiful facial expressions. Faucking love them. This was made before he was diagnosed, but all the beauty is there. So, this truly reinforces that my problem is more with certain current depictions than any underlying reality, but it always kind of comes off short of what I intended:

I admit I knew nothing about Tumblr’s founders or anything until a few days ago. Just heard that it was cool for artworks and started putting eveything under the firmament out there, post after post, not looking up really. No purpose, no greater design, nothing like that. But, this David Karp is a New Yorker, so that is faucking cool!! Now, I no longer think of the site like Cablevision or the power being out, when it’s like: “Damn lights at it again! Get dem bozos on the horn at Con Ed!”

Nothing like that no more. Though admit to hopin it aint warped and bent to beyond recognition in 6 months, since half and then some of everything I’ve ever done is on Tumblr, and as much as it’s great to interact with others and show shit to the world, it’s also a sort of online repository of images in case laptop crashes.
